Blogger Vs WordPress

July 7, 2006

Before I started blogging, I only knew about Livejournal, Blogspot and very little bit about wordpress. A few years ago, the other blog tools I have not even heard of.

When I decided to have my own blog, I forgo the thought of Livejournal. I had played with it a little a few years back and to use it now I find it a little outdated. I was also not too adventurous to try out wordpress. Many blog I read usually have the url ****.blogspot.com, to me it’s like the most famous too and naturally I have choosen to have my blog with blogger.

Because some unhappy incidents that happened to my fellow bloggers, I have seriously started to think about blog security at Blogger and hence almost at once make up my mind to try WordPress. (I also just found out about the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. The earlier, you need to install in your pc and pay for hosting somewhere. The later is a free one like Blogger. Of course there are limitation in WordPress.com but still I find it better than Blogger.

Here’s the comparison. I’m writing it in a very layman terms from my experience. I might not be accurate because I didn’t really play around much in Blogger. Just my little finding.

Blogger: Easy to use. For a first timer and for a non techie it’s just a simple few steps and you will have your own blog.

WordPress: Since I’m already with Blogger a while. It didn’t take me long to be familiarise with the features. But for first timer, I think you will need to spent some time exploring it.

Blogger: Clean layout at Dashboard.

WordPress: A lot of information. But once get use to it, it’s not too bad.

Blogger:  No import function.

WordPress: Got import function. Allows me to migrate all my old posts including comments from Blogger here. Not too hard to use. I had 222 posts and 8 drafts in Blogger. The first attempt, I managed to migrate a quarter post but a mess with duplicates and then I spent 1 day migrating but failed with error. The next day with good support, I got it done in 10 minutes.

Blogger: No support. Don’t know where to send feedback. FAQ also don’t have information I look for

WordPress: Good support. Got quick respond after I sent out a feedback and guided to the correct forum to solve my import problem. Even the FAQ site got better and detail information

Blogger: Unable to have password protected post

WordPress: Beside password protected post, you can also have private post (for registered reader I suppose)

Blogger: No comment off option. Need to play with the code

WordPress: Can easily have comment off option

Blogger: No scheduled posting. Every post will be published as at when it’s created. If you done a draft early and want to post later, you might need to create new post and copy paste the html code from the old post to the new one so that the font and paragraphing still the same

WordPress: Allow scheduled posting. Now I can have 1 post a day and even weekends also I can have a new post.

Blogger: Slow upload of picture. Multiple upload doesn’t work sometimes and img url also doesnt work for me. But you can change the size.

WordPress: Fast easy upload. But size is small. No multiple upload

Blogger: Can change font type, font colour and font size

WordPress: Can’t do that unless you edit the post HTML code

Blogger: No category function

WordPress: With category. Love it . Wanted it since day 1 I’m blogging

Blogger: Can play with the raw HTML of the blog

WordPress: Not able to access the HTML. Alot of things cannot be done. Unless you are using wordpress.org

Blogger: Can have adsense

WordPress: No adsense when I’m thinking of having one. :(

Blogger: Can change template. But first need to back up the code and copy backlater. Else you will loose your customize sidebar.

WordPress: Easy to change template and still maintain your customize sidebar. No need to go through hassle of editing code when you want to update your sidebar.

Blogger: The side pre-view doesn’t look as the actual. Not nice

WordPress: Easy posting, updating and at the same time can preview in the same page

Blogger: Posting function very simple

WordPress: Advanced and with many function

Blogger: No build in Recent comment. A little bit hard to moderate the comments depend on your option

WordPress: Easy and nice

Blogger: No build in Calender

WordPress: Can choose to have Calender at side bar

More technical and accurate information here and here

Dont you find WordPress “COOL”… if can I would really like to use wordpress.org one day for a more customize blog.

Almost Done..

July 7, 2006

Glad that it’s almost done. Have already migrated all my old posts here from Blogger. A little mess though, need sometime to sort it out, categorized each post and re-insert videos and relink photo to the right source

After all this is done, I’m going to delete my blogger’s blog. Not going to maintain 2.

Maybe need a week or so to sort out all the two hundred over posts.

Sleepless Night

July 7, 2006

I had one sleepless night last night. Woke up with a bad headache and a heavy eye lids this morning. Head spinning, struggling to keep my eyes open now. Has been thinking of the much much undone work on my blog. So many things yet to be done.

Can’t wait to get up “HOME” up again.
